Pool Care checklist
While many pool owners reduce their pool usage over the winter months, cutting back your pool care routine during this time may result in more significant issues that need costly repairs or extensive cleaning when spring arrives.
Regular, consistent pool care reduces the time and effort needed to restore your pool water quality and overall condition. It also helps protect your pool pump, filter and other components from damage caused by the change in season.
Follow our simple checklist to ensure your pool stays at its healthiest best
1. Filter maintenance
Even though you may not be swimming, it’s still important to maintain your water circulation as it helps to avoid algae growth and other pool problems. Keep your pool filtration system running for a shorter duration but consistently throughout winter. Aim for around 4-6 hours per day. This helps remove debris and maintains the circulation of your pool’s water.

2. Lights check/replacement
It’s important to continue to check your lights for any damage, cracks or potential leaks. One indication of a leak is if the pool water has dropped to the level around the top of the light. If you notice anything unusual about your pool light, we recommend getting it checked urgently.
3. Scum treatment
For all-year-round pool health, consider using a scum treatment like Vitalyse Filter Cleaner & Degreaser.
It’s an easy-to-use, single dose, quality maintenance product that is designed to keep your pool healthy by removing oils, scum and dirt build up, allowing greater filtration and thereby providing cleaner water. Learn more about the benefits of a good quality filter degreaser here.

4. Gauge and equipment check
Your pool filter gauge indicates whether your filter’s pressure is operating at the right levels. While the average pressure value for each pool will change slightly, a value of between 50-70kPA would indicate the filter is clean. Backwashing is indicated when the pressure exceeds approximately 100kPA. You’ll need to get familiar with the numbers for your pool’s gauge, and track these over time. If the pressure starts to increase or decrease, it could indicate a problem that needs to be resolved.
