How to Fix Cloudy Pool Water
Cloudy pool water can be a real pain. And tackling it might seem like a mammoth task. But don’t worry. Whatever the pool water problem, there is always a solution. In our previous video, we talked about what causes cloudy pool water. Let’s jump in now and talk about how to fix a cloudy pool.
What causes a cloudy pool?
Because there are many possible causes of cloudy pool water, accurate water testing is the first step in fixing a cloudy pool. This pool had a heavy swimmer load over the summer months, which led to poor water balance. After water testing and identifying incorrect chlorine levels, the solution to fixing this cloudy pool was easy. This pool was looking miserable because of malfunctioning equipment, but now it’s sparkling and ready to swim in.
What chemicals do you need to treat a cloudy pool?
So you want to know how to treat your cloudy pool water? Well, you’ve come to the right place. First though, let’s break down the chemicals that you’re going to need to treat that cloudy pool water. First, you’re going to need some chlorine. Now, chlorine comes in a range of different types. So, please consult a pool professional like your local Poolwerx. They’ll be able to assist you in finding which chlorine is the best match for your pool, including your pool surface and your pool equipment.
Next, you’re going to need pH control, whether that’s liquid acid or dry acid. You’ll also need algaecide to remove the algae. And finally, you’re going to need a clarifier, whether it’s CrystalClear, 4 in 1, or the Maxi tabs, these will help maintain the clarity of your pool water. Now, obviously these pool chemicals will require you to wear personal protective equipment. We’re talking gloves, safety glasses, and of course, protective clothing.
Treating a cloudy pool isn’t hard, but it can be complicated.
The most important thing to know is, why the pool went cloudy in the first place. And to do this, we use a computerised water test. After analysing the water test results, buy the chemicals recommended for your type of pool, follow the process here, and you can return to swimming as soon as possible.
Step one
Add the chlorine, the algaecide and the clarifier to three different areas of your pool. Remember, these chemicals can discolour the pool surface if left to settle. So make sure they are well dissolved into your pool.
Step two
Brush the sides and the bottom of your pool.
Step three
Leave the filtration on until the pool is clear. Now this might take a little while, make sure that your pool pressure doesn’t go too high. If it does, you might need to clean your pool filter.
Step four
Once the pool has transformed back to clear, resume your normal filtration running times. Now this might take a few days depending on your pool, your equipment and the weather.
Step five
Get a final computerised water test. This will let you know if you need to add any final balancing chemicals. Buy these chemicals, add them to your pool and resume swimming as soon as possible. Sometimes the test results from a computerised water test can indicate that there might be a problem with the chlorinator or pool sanitising system. If this is the case, then it’s a good idea to book an onsite assessment with a pool technician.
Common Problems when you’re trying to treat your cloudy pool water
Before we wrap up, let’s just talk about two common problems which may occur when you’re trying to treat your cloudy pool water. One, has the pool water turn cloudy after you’ve added the chlorine? This could be because of very poor quality pool chemicals. The cloudiness is in fact caused by filler, which is in there to bulk out the chemicals. Two, can you smell chlorine? Chlorine is very important in helping your pool not become cloudy, but if you can smell it, it might mean that things are the way they should be.
