John O'Brien
As Executive Director and Founder of Poolwerx Corporation, John O’Brien leads one of the world’s leading swimming pool and spa service companies.
John O’Brien’s passion and experience both in franchising and the swimming pools and spas aftermarket is difficult to rival. He is an experienced hands-on leader and entrepreneur with a talent for bringing order to disorganised industries.
John founded Poolwerx – his 5th successful franchised network – a quarter of a century ago and has grown it into a global, multi-award winning system. In 2017 Poolwerx was recognised by the Franchise Council of Australia as ‘Franchise System of the Year’ (for the 2nd time) and in recent years, Poolwerx Franchise Partners have been awarded ‘Best Multi-Unit Franchise’ three times over.
John is an inductee into the FCA Hall of Fame, past Chair of the World, Asia Pacific and Australian Franchise Councils and is a founding member of the Australian Federal Government’s (ACCC) franchise advisory group, currently bringing order and accountability to the sector as a whole. Now a global brand, Poolwerx is expanding rapidly in the USA and now is number three in its industry in the world. It is by far ANZ’s most prominent pool retail and service group with more than 161 stores and 634 service vehicles operating throughout more than 350 territories across 3 countries.

The Early Years & Expansion
Founded by John O’Brien in 1992, ‘Mobile Pool & Spa Care’ started with just six vans and a vision to bring professional pool care services to an industry that for many years, was disorganised.
In 1993, John rebranded and founded Poolwerx
By 1995 Poolwerx launched its first franchise, marking the beginning of a franchise model that would drive expansion across Australia.
Poolwerx rapidly expanded nationwide, building a strong brand and reputation as a trusted pool service provider, and successful franchise model.
Strengthening the Business Model
By 2006, Poolwerx was one of Australia’s largest pool service brands and launched the first mobile service in New Zealand.
Focus shifted to refining the franchise business model and implementing high standards in operations, training, and customer service.
Poolwerx introduced innovations in service quality, improving pool technician training and equipping franchisees with industry-leading tools and resources.
Developing the Global Formula
In March 2015, more than 20 years after first opening our doors, Poolwerx Poolwerx expanded internationally, moving into the United States and building a footprint across North America.
The company continued to grow, reaching over 150 franchise partners across Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S.
Opened a North Amercial Poolwerx Support Centre in Dallas.
Poolwerx is one of a very few Australian franchise businesses who have been successful in the US.
Celebrating 30 Years
Poolwerx celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2022, marking three decades of poolside memories, industry leadership and innovation. This milestone highlighted the Poolwerx’ commitment to excellence and the strength of its franchise network.
